When Lil Nas X burst onto the scene, few knew what to make of him, least of all, the country music establishment.

When he created a collection with Wrangler, country fans boycotted the cowboy culture outfitters, even though the American cowboy only exists thanks to Mexican and black vaqueros.

When his first single “Old Town Road” climbed the country music charts, Billboard pulled it as “it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

Less than two weeks later, “Old Town Road” was the most-played song in America. It samples a Nine Inch Nails song, making it the first #1 single for writers Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, too. Add collaborator Billy Ray Cyrus to that list. His last hit song “Achy Breaky Heart” only ever reached number 4.

(Billboard subsequently reinstated “Old Town Road,” and it became the longest-running #1 single in history. YEE. HAW.)

Now, Lil Nas X is back at it with the “Rodeo” remix. The original featured Cardi B, but this version taps the illmatic Nas, who happily claims his young gun namesake.

Clearly inspired by “Thriller,” “The Matrix,” and “Blade,” along with a slew of other 80s and 90s horror flicks, “Rodeo (Remix)” is a hilariously clever video from the super imaginative and fearless mind of Lil Nas X. It’s full of macabre eye candy, so you may need a repeat watch to catch it all.

Just don’t invite him in.

He might stick around and embarrass you.
