(no one’s ever asked me any questions* about SOUND IN COLOR, but I imagine they would go something like this.)
SO… WHAT IS THIS?

SOUND IN COLOR is written each June as a journey of sight and sound into the history, joy, pain and power of African-American music.

OK. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

You like listening to music?
You like watching music videos?
You like knowing the story behind music you love?
Then hot damn, you’ll love SOUND IN COLOR.

COOL, SO HOW DO YOU PICK THE SONGS?

I choose songs steeped in cultural and visual storytelling.
Some were/are global hits at a distinct moment in time.
Others are lesser known but deserve to be seen and heard.
ALL are by AFRICAN-AMERICAN musicians (unless indicated).

AND HOW DOES THIS PLAYLIST WORK?

I post songs twice daily, SIDE A and SIDE B.
(Explicit content is almost exclusively on SIDE B.)
Each post details a song’s content, visuals, and audio .
Whether you read, listen, watch or all of the above is up to you.

DOPE. WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

Well, aside from the many ways on this website, follow the FULL SOUND IN COLOR Collection on Spotify and YouTube.

ALRIGHT! BUT WHO ARE YOU & WHAT MAKES YOU AN EXPERT?

Hi! I’m Joy. And I’m just an ordinary person!
I was born in the South and raised on vinyl and mixtapes.
My college curriculum included Art History, the History of Rock & Roll,
and even the world’s first Beyoncé Feminism/Rihanna Womanism course.
Then I grew up into an advertising copywriter by trade.
That’s me!

IS THAT IT, THOUGH?

No, you right. When I’m not DJing SOUND IN COLOR every June, find me at:
