DAY 12 | SIDE A — “Make Me Want To” by Jimmie Allen

After years of hard work, rejection, unsolicited opinions, and funny looks in the country business, it’s no surprise that Jimmie Allen would wish for a fairytale life.

In his video for “Make Me Want To,” a good deed leads to a marvelous gift, and after a bit of practice, Jimmie makes magic for himself and a special lady.

But real life was never so easy for the African-American country breakout. He’s got the cliche “moved to Nashville and lived in the back my car” story, for sure. But Jimmie’s been close enough to touch a dream, only to have it fall just out of reach. Cut just before American Idol’s live performance rounds, he kept his dream alive by joining a songwriting publisher. In a writers’ showcase where record companies typically source music for their own artists, instead Jimmie himself was signed almost immediately.

Since then, 3 of his songs have charted on Billboard, including one that crossed over from the country charts to the Hot 100, and another that made the Spotify Viral 50 list.

On second thought, maybe it’s not so much that Jimmie wished for a fairytale in creating “Make Me Want To.” Maybe it’s that after all the years he chased a dream, having finally caught it in the palm of his hand just feels like one.
