KAMAUU’s name means “quiet warrior” in Kenya, and it feels prophetic.
He sings with a signature falsetto that’s smooth and understated— groovable, if you will—but still strong and determined, just as his name would have you assume.
That’s also not his original first name.
His American parents “wanted to change that trajectory of psychological slavery that’s present in almost every Black home, starting with the names. Because sound is very important and what I answer to is very important,” he said of them officially renaming their whole family. “We learn English and we learn the relevance of what blackness is in English. We take Christianity, we know what blackness and darkness is in it. Accepting these identities they give me, means I’m accepting in this European language, the European perspectives of blackness. You had KAMAUUs before the Middle Passage. That’s a huge weapon that I have now.”
So the quiet warrior with a secret weapon of a name… is writing love songs? Yep.
He’s real woke like that.
And the lyrics in “MANGO” only double down on that wokeness. Instead of a kind of love that’s self-serving, KAMAUU croons about one that’s always seeking growth, and sometimes growth is found in letting go. “If what’s best is someone else, who am I to block a blessing?” he asked.
He got a blessing himself in bass goddess Adeline. “MANGO” wouldn’t be the delight that it is with her holding down the beat, and it’s a real toss-up whether you’ll be staring at her because she’s gorgeous or because you can’t believe a living person can create that sound with their two hands.
The music media defines KAMAUU as an artist, rapper, poet, thinker, and philosopher, but they don’t frequently mention his Pratt Institute degree in filmmaking. All of his videos open like a 35-mm film reel, which is kinda perfect for his pure, vintage sound, and also means that like a movie, once you start watching, you’ve gotta see how it ends.
That’s strategy. Quiet warrior, indeed.
