Dive into another vivid landscape this Sunday with Esperanza Spalding’s music and her video for “Lest We Forget (Blood).”
Where Sa-Roc was a stark rose among concrete, Esperanza winds her blood ties through the tall trees and deep roots of a vast forest, turning it increasingly redder.
It speaks to the concept of her album “12 Little Spells,” where each song is an intimate dedication to a function of the human body. And here in the video for “Lest We Forget (Blood),” Esperanza’s beautiful, ethereal simplicity speaks to her deeper, earthbound meaning: all creatures on this planet are interconnected by blood, even down to the veins of the tiniest leaves.
“12 Little Spells” is a tremendous departure from Esperanza’s usual jazz sound. But considering she’s already won or been nominated for 7 Grammys in 9 years for instrumental and vocal jazz performance, along with Best New Artist, it’s not surprising that she’d want to try something new. Especially since the bass, her primary instrument now, wasn’t even among the first 3 instruments she played.
At fifteen, she’d picked one up during a music class and started (no pun intended) fiddling around, when she realized she wanted more, like “waking up one day and realizing you’re in love with a co-worker.” The music teacher taught her to play one single blues line on it, and she turned that line into her first gig.
Now, she’s one of the most well known and winningest jazz artists in modern music, including a 2020 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album with “12 Little Spells,” leaving us a rich look at her experimental roots and boundless talent… lest we forget.
