Well, you didn’t think that just because our music scene is overflowing with hipsters, blues wailers and soul sisters, we couldn’t drop real bars too, huh?

In fact, it was Austin’s live music scene that inspired the sound of one of our most outstanding hip-hop acts, Magna Carda.

More specifically, the duo of lyricist Megz Kelli and producer Dougie Do innovated the “indie trap” genre by melding hip-hop, funk and electronic music with a live band, and in doing so Megz says, “we tapped into something no one else is doing. It led us to exactly where we needed to be… returning to the roots of where hip-hop was for us, or what poetry was for the black community.”

“Joccin’” is the perfect illustration of all of the above. Equal parts grimy third-coast rhymes, bassed-out acid beats (with a psychedelic backdrop to match), and chill soul vibes, it all comes together so fluidly, you’ll barely notice when you go from throwing bows to body-rolling faster than Megz can spit her lightning flow.
