“Blade Runner” meets “Cats” meets “Tron” meets Hanna-Barbera.

That’s shorthand for the George Clinton acid trip that is “Atomic Dog.” In 1983, it was nominated for two Billboard Video Music Awards for best art direction and best special effects, but didn’t win either. It was robbed.

As the creator of the iconic Parliament-Funkadelic Collective, George Clinton’s influence on music worldwide can’t even be quantified, but “Atomic Dog” alone has been sampled in over 300 other songs. It’s been featured in films, covered by other bands and played at so many sports games that it’s not just a musical phenomenon, but a cultural treasure.

P-Funk’s sonic and visual impact on the world is even more spectacular when you realize that George Clinton is color-blind and can’t “play sh*t. Never have,” he says. “I know what I need to hear, though, and I know how to get players to do it.”

It’s impossible to say whether he wore and created such outrageous things as a result of those disadvantages or in spite of them, but either way, fans of music and fashion are all the better for the fearless, outlandish and extraordinary George Clinton.
