Without a doubt, Footloose, Grease, and Dirty Dancing form the Holy Trinity of modern American dance cinema classics.

And there’s hardly a black character among them.

But we watched anyway, in part, because they were inescapable. Slumber parties, high school musicals, spring break soundtracks, all a non-stop reminder that in the American song-and-dance utopia, black and brown people didn’t even exist.

Enter DUCKWRTH. In his vision of that world – “Crush” – his leading ladies aren’t cliché, angsty, entitled outsiders, but in the words of LL Cool J, “around the way girls.” DUCKWRTH spends most of this slice-of-life video sharing truly musical-worthy moves with and having his heart stolen by each lovely lady he encounters in South L.A.

“I’m a habitual crusher, I probably crush like 20 times a day, scrolling through socials. This song and video serve as my confessional. Pray for me,” DUCKWRTH teases.

“Crush” is a poppy soul earworm with a feel-good summer Friday video that’s chock full of #BlackBoyJoy and #BlackGirlMagic, as well as an imaginative look at what those classic movie musicals could have been with a little more color.
